Annu Kapoor was born on February 20, 1956, in Itwara, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. His father, Madanlal, was a Punjabi with roots in Peshawar, and his mother, Kamal, was a Ghoti Brahmin. His father owned a traveling Parsi theatre company, and his mother was an Urdu teacher and a trained classical singer. Annu Kapoor’s early life was marked by his family’s involvement in the arts and his exposure to a mix of cultural influences.

The family history of Annu Kapoor is marked by his grandfather’s service as a doctor in the British Army, Dr. Kripa Ram Kapoor, and the martyrdom of his great-grandfather, Lala Ganga Ram Kapoor, during the Indian freedom movement.

Due to financial constraints, Annu had to quit school after secondary education. He joined his father’s theatre company on his father’s insistence and later enrolled in the National School of Drama in 1976, following his brother Ranjit Kapoor’s advice.

After graduating from the National School of Drama and a brief stint with its repertory company, he began his acting career in earnest. His first significant role was in the play “Ek Ruka Hua Faisla,” and he was later signed by film director Shyam Benegal for the 1983 film “Mandi” after Benegal saw Kapoor’s performance.
